One of the necessities after your baby comes home from the hospital is a place that’s safe and comfortable to sleep in. Of course, there’s a lot of preparation as not only do babies need their space, but there are design considerations that you also need to keep in mind. Here are some guidelines that you can follow to help you and your baby feel comfortable at home together:
Lighting
Seeing is the least of your baby’s concerns, but that doesn’t mean that the room’s lighting scheme isn’t important. The nursery’s position plays a key role in this factor. If it’s oriented in such a way that it faces the sun for a good part of the day, then you can take advantage of the natural lighting, but take care not to let in too much. The windows can be outfitted with a protective tint that allows just the right amount of light but eliminates too much heat and UV rays. If you already have good windows, you can use blinds as alternatives for natural light control. As for electrical light, opt for eco-friendly LED bulbs that offer soft illumination. Once babies start to open their eyes, they’ll still be sensitive and won’t be able to take shining bright lights.
Color Considerations
It’s a common thought that a nursery should have a color scheme based on the baby’s gender. Don’t let that limit your choices when it comes to your young one’s room as you can get better colors than simple baby blues or pinks.
You can use ones that are aligned with nature such as green or brown. White can even be a choice, although not as popular since most people think it looks plain. Icons or characters are also an option if you have a particular hobby going such as sports or cartoons, but be critical of how it will be applied to the nursery. You don’t even have to use paint for creating the designs; an interesting idea is utilizing discontinued wallpaper as an accent to the rest of the wall.
Safety
No parent would want their precious baby getting hurt out there, let alone inside their own crib. Make sure that the sleeping surface is flat and can accommodate your baby’s back so that you can lower the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Once the baby can move around, build a fence or divider around the area to prevent them from going out of the room while you’re not looking. Be mindful about toys that have small parts. If the room also happens to have objects for display, make sure that the cabinets and drawers are high enough for them to be unable to reach. This will avoid the possibility of them reaching for something heavy that can eventually fall on your baby. If both of you work and won’t be able to watch your child all the time, a security camera and a baby monitor are a must.
It is important to make your baby’s nursery a safe place for both of you. It should be comfortable and calm. Having a baby is one of the most exciting experiences in the world but can be stressful if you are not prepared to take care of your newborn.
